Vista Feature - People Near Me
People Near Me is a new feature in Vista whereby other Vista users on the same network are made visible and available for collaboration sessions. Others on the People Near Me list can see and join these sessions if they know the session password (you can also hide sessions from view if you want). The Windows Meeting Space (also known as Windows Shared View) works with the People Near Me feature to allow you to invite others to meetings and give presentations, share handouts and send private notes to participants. For more info on how it works, see http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/8a70907e-9137-4426-a46f-a2d1eeadbd5a1033.mspx?mfr=true
As a side note, I have played with this for about 15 minutes and it seems amazing. Granted, I was testing it with another Vista user on the same LAN, but it was very cool. The features are great and it is very user intuitive and graphically appealing...

Windows Meeting Space
Vista is supposed to have a major upgrade to NetMeeting called Windows Meeting Space. It supposedly has a more professional appearing interface. With WMS, you can have meetings with up to ten participants, where you can share your desktop or applications, connect to a network projector to view presentations, and pass notes privately to other participants. You can even distribute documents as handouts, and any participant can edit them with the changes automatically propagated to each particpant's copy (while leaving the original unchanged). Unfortunately, it can't be installed on pre-Vista operating systems, as it depends on Vista's People Near Me peer-to-peer networking functionality and uses IPv6, which is installed and enabled by default in Vista. But it's an easy, cost effective way to conduct small virtual meetings. Check out more on it here.

Information Rings

This is just a concept, which I usually don't post about, but I thought this was a really cool idea. Basically, they are rings that store personal information, like what would be on a business card, and when two people shakehands, it puts the rings close together and they exchange their stored information. That way, you can not worry about finding their business card later or getting it all into your PC, it would be done automatically for you. I'd be interested to see the technology used to pull this off. Bluetooth?

Google Talk for Everyone
Posted by Mike Jazayeri, Product Manager, Google Talk
Last year, we launched Google Talk, a free and easy service for making voice calls and sending instant messages. It used to be that only Gmail users could use Google Talk but now anyone can sign up for Google Talk. If you haven't tried the service yet, here are 5 good reasons to give it a try: now anyone can use the service (Gmail accounts no longer required) free and crystal clear voice calls to your friends and family anywhere in the world transfer files and folders to others free voicemail messages (MEEP!) IM from your BlackBerry Just sign up, invite some friends, and you can be chatting with them in minutes. There are millions of people around the world to chat with! There are, however, still some features including chat histories and mail notifications that will only work if you sign into Google Talk with a Gmail account. Either way, we encourage you to give it a try.

Jajah Phone Service
An interesting concept in reduced rates or free calling. Put in your phone number, put in the phone number of the person you want to call. Jajah calls you, then Jajah calls the other person. USA to USA/Canada/Hong Kong/Singapore/China and other Jahjah users are free. Other rates are really low (ie, 7.5 cents to Brasil from the US.) For people that want to save money on long distance and especially those with friends/family overseas, this is a really cool idea. Has features like Google Homepage and Outlook add ins and works on Java or Symbian mobile phones. Worth checking out. My only caveat is, like some of these other great and mostly free ideas, don't get attached. I don't know how long this company will last without upping their rates or getting shut down by big telecom somehow...
Toshiba Battery Recall
After Dell and Apple, now Toshiba plans to recall 340,000 notebook computer batteries. At least some of the batteries were manufactured by Sony Corp, the report said. After the Dell and Apple recalls, Sony stated that those were the only affected ones, but this recall appears to be a different problem (or at least that's what they claim). Instead of go on fire, they stop recharging and/or run out of power. The culprits are in the Dynabook and Satellite laptops that Toshiba sold this year between March and May.
In a related story: Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, and Qantas Airways of Australia have stopped passengers using their Dell and Apple laptops for fear of overheated laptop computer batteries. Forget catching up with email off-line or watching a movie on these airlines. U.S. airlines have not followed suit yet, that could potentially affect thousands of international travelers.

Dell Drops to Fourth Place, Sun Moves Up
Sun Microsystems has made some headway recently. Gartner reported that Sun's share of overall server revenues went up 1.7% year-over-year to 12.9%. All other four top vendors lost share. Sun pushed Dell out of its third place (in revenue) behind IBM and HP. Dell now has 10.3% of all server revenues, down from 11.1%. Regarding Unix, last year Sun was third in Unix, now it's first. IBM's position dropped to 31% of revenues and HP fell to 27.8%. The whole server market by itself was up 0.6% to $12.3 billion in the second quarter, as per IDC.

Google Talk Update
Ok, looks like the rest of you should now have the updated Google Talk that allows file sharing, current music track, and voicemail. Your Google Talk should auto update to the new version, but if it hasn't updated yet and you really want it NOW, then go to http://www.google.com/talk/. I'm glad I'll actually be able to USE the file share features I've had now that everyone else has it too. :-)
Small Google Talk Fix
I noticed today that Google fixed a tiny annoyance in Google Talk. The "Current Music Track" feature is pretty cool, but it was annoying that when it changed your status (when your song changed), it also changed it in any open window where you were chatting. That meant if you left your chat window open, 15 minutes later it would have about 5 status change messages. This really filled up your chat logs. Anyway, they have now fixed it so that it updates your status in the Google Talk window, but it doesn't actually update the status in your open chat windows. HOWEVER, if you don't use the "Current Music Track" feature, it still updates your open IM windows whenever you change your Status to a custom status (Available isn't considered custom as far as I can tell, so it doesn't update on that.) Nice.

People always ask, what makes Google tick? There are two key elements: our ongoing commitment to building great technology that empowers people like you -- and of course our passion for free T-shirts. Everyone who buys something for $20 or more through Google Checkout all day today gets a free T-shirt. So find something you want to buy, enjoy faster checkout online -- and make room in the drawer for your new apparel.

Popularity Dialer
This is actually quite hilarious. You put in your phone number and a time you want it to call you. Then, you will get a call at exactly that time and there will be a prerecorded voice on the other end that has a conversation with you. Make yourself look important, get a phone call from "the boss" so you can leave, whatever your deceitful heart desires. You can pick from different voices and such, which you can preview online. I think I'll set it to call my brother during his wedding to see if he remembered to shut his cell phone off. :-)

Amazon.com Grocery?
Do you remember that class in Business Management where we talked about Amazon.com and how they diversified so they were selling everything including the kitchen sink? And how that was a really bad idea and they really struggled with it until they got back to their core competencies? I'm curious as to the real long term success of this, but I see some pros. 1) I've always thought online grocery shopping would take off if done right, and I think Amazon.com if anyone can do it right. 2) They've had it in Beta, which means people are actually using it and have proven the idea can work. I'll be interested to see how it turns out. Might be time to get that amazon.com credit card with rewards!

Google Talk Updates
Ok, they are finally getting to some features that are pretty standard in IM that I think are important. They take their time, but I think they do things right when they do them. :-) My favorite is music status where it shows what song you are currently listening to. I launched Windows Media Player and Google Talk popped up and let me know about the feature and asked if I wanted to turn it on. Very cool.

If a friend isn't around to answer your call, now you can leave a voicemail. You can even leave voicemail messages for your friends who don't use Google Talk--they'll receive an email with the message attached as an audio file. Learn more

Personalized Google for Mobile Phones
Ok, so everyone knows that you can customize your Google homepage with cool stuff like a Gmail applet, Google Calendar, Weather, Google RSS Reader, etc. However, did you know you can customize your mobile phone's www.google.com/ig look and feel as well? Start by going to http://www.google.com/ig/cp on your computer to setup how you want Google to look on your mobile phone. Once that is saved, go to www.google.com on your mobile phone, go to Personalized Homepage, sign in, and you have your most important features right there at your finger tips. Nice!
Add Maps to Outlook with Windows Live
Get Windows Live Local for Outlook (Beta)—free! For the times you can’t afford to be late:
* Map appointments
* Send attendees a map
* Be alerted based on travel times
To get it to work, go to your Outlook Calendar, start a new meeting, and go to the Location tab. Sweet! My favorite feature in this is that it will estimate drive time and if you want, it will automatically calculate that into the appointment. I'm always wondering if I should build it right into the appointment and risk not remembering exactly when it starts, or making a separate appointment for travel. Now it can all be one thing and it's very clear. You can also print the directions with one button on the Location tab. Overall, based on my one use of it so far, I like it. Sorry Google. :-)
(NOTE: Doesn't work if you have the Office 2007 beta installed)

Google Vision
This one is a pretty "out there" concept. Straight from "the cool hunter":
Get lost? Do you? Well, yet another bright young designer from the U.K is developing a system that will have tag and name exactly what your staring at. Google Vision is a conceptual product developed by Callum Peden, for the worlds favorite search engine. The product provides the user with a truly unique information hub by combining GPS, OLED technology and advanced image recognition in the form of a retractable screen device.
The Global Positioning System will see the end of wondering the streets asking for directions and the small roller ball will allow for easy navigation of the flexible screen. Brilliant for identifying landmarks whilst on holidays, Google vision acts as a personal; tour guide.
As well as this, advanced image recognition will mean Google Vision can target well known landmarks. Then using the increased coverage of wireless internet, provide the user with information on their surroundings wherever they may be. by Andy G

The Tank Motorcycle
Now this is right up my alley. Thanks TechEBlog...
The Hyanide is actually a “a bike, a snowmobile and a 4 X 4 hybrid” that sports tank-like treads — powered by a 60hp 500cc single-cylinder engine, with a top speed of 85mph. Pricing and availability have not yet been announced.
The tank-like tread consists of 77 identical segments—each made from hard plastic covered with tire rubber —held together by Kevlar rope. Each segment flexes independently, making the tread significantly more limber than if its components were rigid. Not only does this setup help with traction, but it would allow the tank- cum-motorcycle to corner like no other vehicle

Residential Video Phone Service
Packet8 Video Phone Service Provider
So we knew that "video phones" were a thing of the future, and some people have been dabbling in it for a while, but with broadband so readily available, it only makes sense that these video phones are a reality now. The cost of the service is the same as anything else ($20/month), but who knows how much the video phone will cost. Undoubtedly propriatary. This will definitely catch on in my opinion...

Microsoft to delay Office 2007
By TODD BISHOP
P-I REPORTER
Microsoft Corp. is pushing back the release of the next version of its widely used Office programs, citing the results of internal testing and feedback from people using preliminary versions of the software.
The company said it now plans to release Office 2007 for businesses by the end of this year, and for consumers early next year. Previously, Microsoft had said it would issue the business version in October through its Volume Licensing program, and the consumer version in January.
Microsoft declined to detail the specific reasons for the delay.
The Office programs are Microsoft's second-biggest moneymaker, behind the Windows PC operating system. The company has already delayed the retail release of the next version of that program, Windows Vista, until January.

Well, I downloaded this new Windows Live Messenger and I don't really think it's all that much different. Supposedly has better webcam capabilities and now supports PC to telephone calling. Think this will be the end of Skype since it has such a huge customer base already? I'm not sure, I think Skype is pretty well established in the market already....

Google Does Online Photo Albums
I like Picasa, so I was excited when I found out that Google is beta testing a new Picasa feature that publishes pictures right from Picasa to the web to share with others. I've been trying it out, and it basically does everything I can really think of that I'd want an online photo album to do. It even has RSS feeds on each album. I'm really happy with how many features this has coming out of the box. Usually Google rolls out new things with very basic features (Google Talk) and it makes you beg for more. But this is pretty good!

PayPal Follow Up
Ok, for those that are interested, I did end up getting my money back. In fact, thanks to the exchange rate changes, I actually MADE some money out of this deal. :-) It took out 620 Great British Pounds on 4/12/2006 which at that time was equal to $1,113.66. Yesterday, 5/22/2006, I received my deposit of 620 Great British Pounds. With today's exchange rate from GBP to USD, the deposit was equal to $1,138.41. I will, however, note that I received NO correspondence from PayPal from the time I filed the complaint (5/12/2006) until I saw that the money was reimbursed (5/22/2006) by randomly checking my PayPal balance online. Either way, I'm happy to report it all worked out.
PS, If you're curious as to why the blogging has slowed down, it's simply because my "auto blogging" feature out of IE has stopped working. I'll create my post, and when I hit Post, it simply erases everything I wrote. Not sure, but it's much more work to actually go to www.blogger.com to create posts, so thus the slow down. :-)

It's live and kicking. What does everyone think about it? I'm not sure if this is something I'll use or not. If it supported RSS feeds, one could use it as a blog site! I'm sure, like Gmail, this will have features pouring in to make it more useful. Or maybe it will never graduate to beta...

PayPal Hacked!
I had quite the experience tonight. I was opening my mail, and was skimming my bank statement. To my surprise, I found a transfer on April 12th to PayPal for $1,200! I knew that couldn't be right, so I logged into PayPal and checked the history. Sure enough, on April 12th, I had $1,200 pulled from my account, converted to British Pounds, then sent to an Ashley Roberts! I checked the details on the transfer to Ms. Roberts and found it was for an ebay listing. I clicked through on the ebay listing and discovered that I had purchased an Acer Ferarri laptop in the UK! However, I wasn't even the high bidder. So, I called PayPal and they assured me that I would get my money back and I should definitely change my password. The wierd thing is that it's pretty cryptic! It's random letters with a number thrown in. Also, they didn't change my password or buy anything else. Very, very odd. It can certainly happen to anyone!

Frequency blocking paint - that you can override
NaturalNano - NaturalNano’s Radio-Frequency Shielding Technology
So we all know about the paint that blocks WiFi and cellular frequencies from working. Movie theatres and such want to use it to stop people from talking during movies (it blows my mind that people actually do this.) However, this is cool because they can selectively turn it on or off by putting an antenna system in there that they can leave on until the movie starts, and then shut down the frequencies once the film starts rolling. Still doesn't make for happy patrons that want to get buzzed when there's an emergency at home...

Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Hardware - Optical Desktop with Fingerprint Reader
I purchased one of these keyboards and it is really quite cool. I don't have to put in my username and password to websites any more. I simply put my finger on the fingerprint scanner and it fills everything in and hits "Submit" for me! The time I spend logging into websites really adds up, so I predict this will save me at least 8 hours of lost time per year (2 minutes a day)! Plus, all of the shortcut buttons (volume, media, my docs, my music, calculator, etc) are really nice. So far, I'd highly recommend this product, even though it's not wireless (the mouse is)!

Nasty Spyware
So I got a nasty spyware that kept coming back no matter how much I tried to zap it with Ad-Aware. I installed the newest Windows antivirus program (Windows Defender) and it is STILL unable to download the latest definitions. So, here's what I had to do. Downloaded a 14 day trial of ewido anti-malware, updated it's definitions, then booted into safe mode and did a full scan. TOOK 1.5 HOURS! However, it found 187 items that Ad-Aware had missed. Rebooted into Normal mode, spyware gone. Props to ewido. I think we all knew that Ad-Aware doesn't catch everything, but I had never heard of ewido before hitting the forums regarding that specific spyware. No more random pop up ads, finally.

10MB Mediacom coming
So Cathy H. from Mediacom tipped me tonight on a new service coming April 1st for you gamers. 10MB Mediacom high speed internet. Instead of 3MB down and 256K up, you'll get 10MB down and 1MB up. This has always been available to businesses, but is just now being offered to residents. It'll cost ya of course. $79.95/month. Probably well worth it when your WOW is lagging...
At 9:50pm on February 27th, I'm pulling 1.4MB down and 252KB up. For an extra $33/month, it'll do for now.
Thanks, Cathy!

I got an e-mail from Scott Adams
Scott Adams, the writer of Dilbert, actually e-mailed me yesterday. Here I thought he would get thousands of e-mails every day and probably wouldn't even read mine. Turns out, he replied!

Did you see that Dilbert was on the Colbert Report last night on Comedy Central?
It was in his "Word" routine. He was talking about riots and on the right hand side, a bullet point came up that said "Dilbert is a riot." :-)

Gmail out of office
Gmail: Help Center - How do I set up an automatic vacation response?
So Gmail now has an "out of office assistant." It's actually kinda cool. It'll e-mail people when you're on vacation, but it only e-mails them your vacation e-mail once every 4 days. Also, you have the option to only activate it for people in your Contact list so it doesn't send it to just anyone who e-mails you.

For a site sponsored by Google and Sun, you would think it would be a lot cooler. Looks like a 15 year old threw it together one night. Also, it really doesn't offer any solutions. I was hoping Google and Sun were going to be announcing an Antispyware software. No such luck...

Good article on how much RAM you really need. I constantly monitor my usage and I bounce anywhere from 800MB to 1.15MB. It largely depends on whether I'm using PHP Live and Microsoft Visual Web Developer or not (recently, using neither.)
