Using a Prius as a UPS for your house

Good Tech News day today I guess. Check this out.

Using a Toyota Prius as a UPS for your house!

Dell Drops to Fourth Place, Sun Moves Up

Sun Microsystems has made some headway recently. Gartner reported that Sun's share of overall server revenues went up 1.7% year-over-year to 12.9%. All other four top vendors lost share. Sun pushed Dell out of its third place (in revenue) behind IBM and HP. Dell now has 10.3% of all server revenues, down from 11.1%. Regarding Unix, last year Sun was third in Unix, now it's first. IBM's position dropped to 31% of revenues and HP fell to 27.8%. The whole server market by itself was up 0.6% to $12.3 billion in the second quarter, as per IDC.

New VW GX3 Motorcycle Concept

Thanks to Dave at BU for pointing me to this one. VW has a concept motorcycle with 3 wheels and side by side seating like a car. 2 wheels in front and 1 in back. Would qualify to drive in the carpool lanes in big cities and has a 4 cylinder 1.6L engine. Looks pretty sweet and expected that if demand is high, would be produced as early as 2007! Click on the image below and then check out the VW GX3 concept and find more pics...

Construction Technology

Check out this video of a table saw that immediately stops when it hits skin. It has this mega braking system that breaks once it's used and has to be replaced, much like an airbag. Pretty cool technology as it uses the inherent electrical charge in the human body to stop the blad within 1/200th of a second.

PS: Happy 5 Year Anniversary, Lacey!

Google Talk Update

Ok, looks like the rest of you should now have the updated Google Talk that allows file sharing, current music track, and voicemail. Your Google Talk should auto update to the new version, but if it hasn't updated yet and you really want it NOW, then go to http://www.google.com/talk/. I'm glad I'll actually be able to USE the file share features I've had now that everyone else has it too. :-)

Small Google Talk Fix

I noticed today that Google fixed a tiny annoyance in Google Talk. The "Current Music Track" feature is pretty cool, but it was annoying that when it changed your status (when your song changed), it also changed it in any open window where you were chatting. That meant if you left your chat window open, 15 minutes later it would have about 5 status change messages. This really filled up your chat logs. Anyway, they have now fixed it so that it updates your status in the Google Talk window, but it doesn't actually update the status in your open chat windows. HOWEVER, if you don't use the "Current Music Track" feature, it still updates your open IM windows whenever you change your Status to a custom status (Available isn't considered custom as far as I can tell, so it doesn't update on that.) Nice.

Free Vista Upgrade with purchase

It's official, Microsoft and major PC vendors WILL be offering a coupon for a free upgrade to Vista with Vista capable PCs sold in Q4. This is so PC vendors don't take a major hit at Christmas time for people wanting to wait until the new operating system is out. So, feel free, buy away, and then get a coupon to upgrade to Vista when it finally releases...

Free Google Checkout Tshirt

This is going to get people to buy stuff, I guarantee it:

People always ask, what makes Google tick? There are two key elements: our ongoing commitment to building great technology that empowers people like you -- and of course our passion for free T-shirts. Today, to thank everyone using Google Checkout to buy stuff online, we thought we'd combine the two. Everyone who buys something for $20 or more through Google Checkout all day today gets a free T-shirt. So find something you want to buy, enjoy faster checkout online -- and make room in the drawer for your new apparel.

Google Checkout

I was going to use Google Checkout to sell my extra body parts, but was SO disappointed to find out that violates their content policy statement! :-)

Popularity Dialer

This is actually quite hilarious. You put in your phone number and a time you want it to call you. Then, you will get a call at exactly that time and there will be a prerecorded voice on the other end that has a conversation with you. Make yourself look important, get a phone call from "the boss" so you can leave, whatever your deceitful heart desires. You can pick from different voices and such, which you can preview online. I think I'll set it to call my brother during his wedding to see if he remembered to shut his cell phone off. :-)

Microsoft Photosynth

Microsoft Live Labs has a beta product (not available for download) that takes multiple images and generates a 3D model. Check out the video, it's pretty impressive.

Amazon.com Grocery?

Do you remember that class in Business Management where we talked about Amazon.com and how they diversified so they were selling everything including the kitchen sink? And how that was a really bad idea and they really struggled with it until they got back to their core competencies? I'm curious as to the real long term success of this, but I see some pros. 1) I've always thought online grocery shopping would take off if done right, and I think Amazon.com if anyone can do it right. 2) They've had it in Beta, which means people are actually using it and have proven the idea can work. I'll be interested to see how it turns out. Might be time to get that amazon.com credit card with rewards!
